What Are Night Terrors?

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Almost everybody has witnessed a night terror in a child, a spouse, a roommate, or a friend, but the precise definition of the condition known in the medical literature as pavor nocturnus requires a reference to the four stages of sleep.

In pavor nocturnus, the sleeper awakens suddenly from stage 4 sleep, usually with screaming, shouting, moaning, or groaning, and then settles back to sleep without fully awakening. Stage 4 is the deepest, most regenerative phase of sleep.

Different stages of sleep explained

In stage 1 sleep, the eyes might roll slowly while the mind wanders. Body temperature and pulse rate both fall.

In stage 2 sleep, the eyes are quiet, and the sleeper may begin to snore as airway resistance increases. Dreams during stage 2 sleep are usually recalled in vague terms.

In stage 3 sleep, it takes a really loud sound to wake up the sleeper. There is further slowing of the metabolism and lowering of body temperature, respirations, and pulse, and the pituitary begins to secrete growth hormone to repair and rejuvenate tissues.

In stage 4 sleep, it is almost impossible to wake the sleeper. Pulse and temperature are at their lowest levels of the night, and growth hormone is at maximal production. Night terrors occur in stage 4 sleep.

And in REM or rapid eye movement sleep, the heart rate is about 5 per cent faster than in the other stages of sleep, and there may be vivid dream recall. If the sleeper is dreaming about a sound, it is harder to awaken him or her.

Sleep disorder and Night Terror

Not everybody goes through the stages of sleep at the same time, but most sufferers of this sleep disorder condition go into stage 4 sleep and are susceptible to episodes 45 to 90 minutes after going to bed. It is almost as if the brain cannot quite go into REM, so tensions build up and the terror results.

Children, in particular, but also adults who have night terrors often cannot recall them. The mind is usually "blank" during the deeper stages of sleep when terrors are absent, but a person who has them may site up in bed for five minutes to half an hour while the heart races 160 to 180 beats a minute, pounding as hard as during intense exercise. The next morning there may be a vague recollection of a shadowy, threatening person or animal (such as snakes and spiders), but often there's no memory of the event at all.

There are several things a night terror is not:

* It is not a sign of mental illness, especially in children. (Adults with this condition tend to have suffered traumatic stress.)
* It is not proof of physical abuse.
* It is not caused by watching scary movies or listening to arguments, although these kinds of emotional stresses may cause insomnia.

Sleep disturbance in children

And there are several ways to distinguish these terrors of the night from other common sleep disturbances:

* Nightmares are remembered. Terrors are not.
* In small children, nightmares usually occur between 4 and 6 am. Terrors usually occur between 1 and 3 am.
* A child who has had a nightmare will respond to comforting. A child who has had a terror usually will not.
* Nightmares occur during REM sleep. Terrors occur during deep sleep.
* Seizures begin and end much more quickly (usually in less than 2 minutes) than either nightmares or terrors (up to 30 minutes). Seizures can have an explosive onset and an equally abrupt offset.
* Nightmares usually are not associated with labored breathing or racing heart. Terrors are usually associated with both labored breathing and racing heart.

The causes of night terrors are as murky as the condition itself, but low blood sugars (hypoglycemia), use of certain antidepressant medications, and genetics may all play a role. And because people who experience night terrors do not have an accompanying dream, they usually do not remember them. It is OK to tell adults they have the condition, but it is usually not a good idea to tell little children.

Interview With Kay Williams and Eileen Wyman, authors of "Butcher of Dreams"

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Kay Williams is a professional actress who has played leading roles at regional theaters around the U.S., including the San Francisco Actors Workshop and the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Among her many credits are the title role in "Miss Jairus," Cybel in "Great God Brown," and Georgette in "The Balcony," all plays that are part of the repertory of the 42nd Street Theater in "Butcher of Dreams." She has also performed in many, many new plays off-Broadway in Manhattan and knows how difficult it is for talented new playwrights to get produced and talented new actors to get noticed. She has acted in radio, television, and films. For several years, she worked behind-the-scenes as assistant producer with an award-winning independent filmmaker in New York. Kay is a co-author of "One Last Dance: It's Never Too Late to Fall in Love," a novel started by her father, Mardo Williams, and finished by her and her sister Jerri Lawrence. The book won a Best Regional Fiction Award from the Independent Publishers Association and was a Finalist in a National Readers' Choice Award, sponsored by the Romance Writers of America.

Eileen Wyman is a writer of short fiction and has edited many books and film scripts. She has had a career in radio/television and is a gifted comedy writer, crafting jokes for speech writers and comedians, humorous fillers for various magazines, and captions for cartoonists. She has written additional dialogue for films. During her long career, Eileen has held a variety of odd jobs to make ends meet-teacher, social worker, office temp. When she grows up, she wants to be either a wizard or a world class tennis player.

Tyler: Thank you, Kay and Eileen, for joining me today. It's always a treat to have two authors to talk to. Let's begin by having one of you just tell us basically what "Butcher of Dreams" is about?

Eileen: "Butcher of Dreams" is a suspense thriller set in the 1980's Hell's Kitchen when porno shops, girlie shows, prostitution and crime ran rampant. With this seedy and ominous Off-Broadway theater district as the backdrop, sensitive, talented actress Lee Fairchild is attempting to start a repertory theater in an abandoned burlesque house.

Grieving for her husband, who recently died of a heart attack (and missing her daughter who's away at college), Lee is vulnerable and, against her better judgment, falls into a passionate affair with a younger man. After a ritual Aztec mask is stolen from her home during a cast party, bizarre, seemingly unrelated events plague the theater. A homeless person is found dead on the third floor, his ring finger missing; an actress is poisoned; an actor stabbed. Strange marking are found painted on a set in construction. Is the stolen Aztec mask with its ancient curse somehow connected?

Who is the madman behind the destruction that is threatening the future of the theater (Lee's dream-come-true)? Lee's mercurial cast and crew become suspects as events escalate to ritual murder, and Lee herself becomes a target.

Tyler: Wow, that sounds like quite a plot. Will you tell me a little bit more about the Aztec mask and the curse associated with it? Is the ritual murder related to the Aztec culture?

Kay: The mask has two grotesque half faces, three bright blue fiercely staring eyes, a long black tongue hanging out of its mouth. (The long black tongue signifies thirst, a thirst for blood perhaps.) When Lee and her family visited Mexico, an Indian reluctantly sold the mask to her husband Richard, saying it would bring bad luck to anyone who owned it. Supposedly, it had been stolen from the Tomb at Monte Alban, the City of the Dead, and had been used in Aztec sacrifices. Six months later Richard was dead of a heart attack. Maybe the Indian was right, Lee thinks. Richard was too young, too healthy to have had a fatal heart attack.

At the cast party later, the actors, intrigued by the mask, take it down from the wall, and as a lark, several try it on. Alan confesses, "The mask took me over." His friend Walter asks to borrow it for a talk he's doing on Indian rites and occult practices for the Society of Medical Anthropology. At the end of the party, Lee discovers the mask is missing. And that's when the havoc begins. Detective Green thinks someone may be trying to scare them out of the theater which, with the gentrification of Hell's Kitchen, may soon become a desirable property. Green also postulates that a cult is involved.

Aztec/Mexican symbols, rites and rituals, including the Cult of the Animal Protector, are intrinsic to the plot right up through the chilling climax.

Tyler: Eileen and Kay, I'm always curious about writer collaborations? What brought the two of you together and how did the two of you work together to write "Butcher of Dreams"?

Kay: We've known each other for a long time. We were having dinner at a Greek restaurant in our neighborhood, drinking wine. Acting roles for me seemed to be drying up. I'd just taken a permanent job that wouldn't allow me to do auditions during the day. Eileen came up with the idea. "We should write a novel." It sounded to me like it was worth a try. The beauty of it was that we could work on it before and after work and on the weekends.

We have different strengths and we felt we could collaborate very well, complementing each other. For instance, Eileen is great at writing humor, especially satirical and black humor; she excels at short pithy character descriptions and terse, meaty descriptions of places, and her ability to come up with off-the cuff quips and funny one-liners for characters is uncanny. Over 25 years as an actress made me strong at character development and narrative line. As we brainstormed, we knew it would have to be a story about the theater. And about New York-in fact, about our fascinating, seamy, grimy, scary neighborhood-where a number of small off-Broadway theaters eked out an existence. You're supposed to write about what you know, right? We also knew we wanted to try suspense.

Together, we drafted a plot-that mutated as we went along. But we did know exactly how we wanted the story to start and how we wanted it to end. We decided to tell the story through the eyes of an actress. She had to be very emotionally vulnerable. So we came up with a back story for her. The antagonist had to be sneaky and scary, a world class liar, slippery as a bar of soap. We wanted the reader to wonder whom to believe among this band of actors-all first class dissemblers. We knew we didn't want the story to revolve around actors working on Broadway, actors who'd made it. We wanted to show the reader what a struggle it is to make a name in the theater (or in any other artistic endeavor, for that matter).

We also wanted to include Aztec/Mexican rites and rituals. And for that, we did research at the library.

I usually did a first pass at a draft. Eileen would make changes. We'd get together and argue and discuss. Through Mystery Writers of America, we found a writers group. So we'd read 10 pages at a time to the group, get feedback and make changes based on their suggestions.

Tyler: Tell me a little bit about the main character, Lee Fairchild, and why you think she is an attractive character to the reader?

Eileen: Lee is smart, tough, talented, able to manage and act successfully in her own off-Broadway theater. She's independent, but vulnerable. She's caring and imaginative. She's lonely. We thought of her as a combination of Holly Hunter and Emma Thompson. She has the intuition of an artist, seeing everyone's side. Lee is so empathetic her husband once told her, "You could identify with a mailbox." That is her strength and her weakness.

Tyler: Does Lee get herself into any dangerous situations, and if so, will you give us a little hint of one?

Eileen: One night Lee works late at the theater. When she leaves, she discovers the battery from her car has been stolen so she has no choice but to stay overnight. (She'd converted a small room on the theater's second floor into a bedroom but hadn't used it after the body of the derelict was found.) In the middle of the night, she hears sounds coming from the third floor construction area. She goes upstairs to investigate. Lighted candles are everywhere. A giant figure draped in a long white robe (an actor's costume, from "The Balcony"), complete with cothurni (high, thick-soled laced boots, also part of the costume), is wearing the hideous Mexican mask that was stolen from Lee's home. The figure stands before a mirror, a bird, painted blue-green, in his hand. He performs a ceremony with the live bird, cutting its wing, crooning to it softly. He discovers Lee hiding behind a shelf of paint cans. As they struggle, Lee tries to lift off the mask to see the face behind it. The last thing she feels are hands around her neck. She survives, suffering only a small cut between her thumb and forefinger. Her next encounter is not so benign.

Tyler: The subtitle is "A Suspense Novel about the Theater." What about the theater appeals to you, especially as a subject for a mystery?

Kay: In the theater, film and TV, where we'd each had years of experience, we'd met many temperamental actors with overblown egos, actors with a heart of gold, actors living alternate lifestyles, brilliant but erratic directors and playwrights. We knew they would make unforgettable characters, characters easy to be suspicious of. In "Butcher of Dreams," we have Alan Dunbar, Lee's Artistic Director, who has troubling gaps in his resume; Ernst Kromer, her other director, who is a tyrant, rigid and uncooperative. In the acting company, we have wraithlike Fleur Mahoney, whose first role is a dead girl-and she almost is; Barry Blackwell, talented actor, compulsive practical joker; Harry O'Brien, company stage manager, who'd kill for a role; beautiful Samantha Read, Barry's live-in lover. Other major characters from the "real" world are just as quirky: Michael Day, Lee's sexy and mysterious assistant; Alan's lover, Walter Kaplan, eccentric psychiatrist and medical anthropologist; Heather, Lee's 18-year-old daughter, who has a surprising secret life; pock-marked, cynical NYPD Detective Mordecai Green, who moonlights as an actor.

Tyler: What specifically about the 42nd Street Repertory Theater, the setting for the book, makes it a great setting for a mystery?

Eileen: The fact that it's an off-Broadway repertory theater-almost an anomaly in New York City; that it's under-budgeted and under-staffed leaves room for plenty of mistakes and mishaps. The time is the mid-eighties. Small, struggling off-Broadway theaters lined 42nd Street. The theater was just three blocks from the Hudson River where an enclave of the homeless lived in cardboard boxes. At that time, the neighborhood was crime-ridden. Live nude shows, erotic bookstores, x-rated movies were just a block away from our apartment complex (we live in Manhattan Plaza, housing for performing artists). Crack cocaine was sold by dealers in the streets. Prostitutes blatantly solicited.

(By the time we finished the book, the Disney Corporation had renovated the Amsterdam Theater, moved in "The Lion King" and Hell's Kitchen was well on its way to being gentrified. Now our area is one of the safest, cleanest neighborhoods in New York City.)

Tyler: What would you say were your biggest influences in writing mysteries?

Kay: We love stories with an odd twist; characters who are slightly askew. These authors are among our favorites: Ruth Rendell, writing as Barbara Vine, P.D. James, Elizabeth George, Dorothy Sayers, Patricia Highsmith.

Tyler: What do you think sets "Butcher of Dreams" apart from the many other mystery novels out there?

Eileen: The book's mixture of temperamental actors, undercurrents of the supernatural, and a madman on the prowl set it apart from the many cozies, police procedurals, legal mysteries, high tech thrillers that dominate today's mystery world. This one is about people whom you like and learn to dislike, dislike and learn to like, real people in believable-if slightly bizarre situations. After all, it is the theater so that added theatrical flair is a must.

Tyler: What do you find most difficult about writing a mystery?

Kay: To give enough clues but not too many so that the reader will guess the culprit right off the bat. It's great to have a writers group as your first audience because if they say, "I suspect so-and-so," you know you have to be a little more subtle and pull back on information you're giving the reader. Also it's difficult knowing what to reveal when. Again, it's a great help having a writers group to bounce first drafts off.

Tyler: What did you most enjoy about writing and collaborating on "Butcher of Dreams"?

Eileen: Collaboration gave us more than one voice.

Also, Kay tended to overlook the flaws in the performers because she identified with them so strongly. I, as a theater-goer and lover of theater, wanted them to behave better. We feel we reached a happy medium.

Tyler: What will your next writing projects be? Do you plan to collaborate on writing more books?

Eileen: We've started a sequel to "Butcher." It opens in Leningrad in 1991-filmmakers competing at the Leningrad International Film Festival, against the chaotic backdrop of a disintegrating Russia. Then the action moves to New York and deals with the Russian Mafia in Brighton Beach and the 42nd Street Rep as it's evolved in the past five years. Also the reader will get a glimpse into the world of making independent films.

Tyler: Do you both plan to stick to writing novels now, or will you return to the theatre-maybe even turn one of your novels into a play?

Kay: We may attempt a screenplay of "Butcher of Dreams." But first we have to get further into our Russian book.

Tyler: Thank you, Kay and Eileen, for joining me today. Before you go, will you tell our readers about your website and what additional information can be found there about "Butcher of Dreams"?

Eileen: Our website is: http://www.calliopepress.com/butcherOfDreams/index.shtml

Additional information on the website includes: suggested book discussion questions, comments about the book from reviewers and readers; authors' pictures and bios; excerpt; ordering information.

Tyler: Thank you, Kay and Eileen. I hope you have many more successful collaborations together.

5 Things Your Baby Can Be For Halloween

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Choosing the right baby costume can be challenging. Luckily, baby costumes are easy to find if you know what to look for. When picking out a baby costume, keep two things in mind: "Will the costume be comfortable for the baby," and "Is this costume going to be cute."

There are hundreds of different options to choose from, and if you are making your own Halloween outfit then there are limitless possibilities. This article will cover some of the most popular baby costumes available.

Baby Animal
Just like babies, baby animals are cute and guaranteed to draw attention. There are lots of different baby animal costumes available online, and a quick search should turn up whatever you are looking for. However, these costumes are often expensive despite their small size. Baby animal costumes are also easy to make yourself with just a few minimum purchases. Animals can usually be recognized by one specific feature, a mane on a lion or the scaly back of a crocodile, and this may be the only feature your costume needs. Consider buying an appropriately colored outfit and adding your own touch to complete the costume.

Baby Flower
Flowers, like animals, are easy costumes to make that almost always look cute. You can make a flower costume by buying a green pair of pajamas and putting together a few cloth petals on a hat. Be careful when making a hat for your baby though. If the hat is too heavy it may pull on the baby's neck. Adding oversized green mittens for leaves is a great way to complete the flower look.

Baby Superhero
Baby superhero costumes are a little more challenging to make than baby animal costumes and baby flower costumes. It may be worthwhile to shop online and to see if you can find a cheap superhero costume. If you are set on making a costume, consider a similar tactic to the baby animal costume. Pick out one key feature of the superhero that you are trying to imitate, like Batman's bat signal or Superman's shield, and add that to clothing of the appropriate color. Baby costumes do not have to be exact replicas. In fact, they are often more effective if they have a little baby touch.

Baby Princess
This is mostly for baby girls. Princesses, especially very specific Disney princesses, can be hard to duplicate for babies. Buying pre-made costumes will probably save lots of time and effort. However, there are lots of dresses available for babies that can be made to look like princess outfits with minimal effort. If you are heart set on copying your favorite princess from the movies, then check online to see if there are any baby costumes in that style available first, and then try and get some ideas about how to go about making it.

No Legs Baby
Baby costumes usually don't require a high degree of mobility. In fact, lots of babies prefer to be bundled up even when the temperature is warm. You can use this to your advantage when buying or making a baby costume. Any object, like a money bag a bottle, that is sack or cylinder shaped can be turned into a baby costume. Making these costumes is usually as easy as sewing two pieces of fabric together and stitching a few letters or words onto the front (don't forget an opening for the babies head!). A quick search online for baby costumes should provide plenty of examples. Or, take a look around your house for objects that would be funny to put a baby into. Some examples include a beer bottle, a sandwich or a bag of chips.

No matter which baby costume you decide on, make sure that your baby can fit in it comfortably. Nothing ruins a costume like excessive crying and discomfort. You may also want to make the costume easy to remove to make diaper changing a snap.

3D Animation the Latest Tech Craze!

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

South Korea's Samsung Electronics have decided to team up with James Cameron the director of the revolutionary 3D flick "Avatar" to make its content compatible with its 3D televisions. Technology has made everything easy for us. Today we can watch and feel life-like pictures sitting at our homes. We all remember how the recent blockbuster, "Avatar" by James Cameron drove us crazy. We love excitement and it is the use of 3D animation in movies that adds that extra zing to the concept of watching films. To put in simple words, 3D animation is the art of creating moving images with the use of computers. Initially there was no such concept. Movies used to be boring and animation used to be done using the concept of 2D or two dimensional pictures. As technology evolved this concept came into being. The use of this technology makes movie watching a pleasurable experience. It makes the movies more appealing and interesting to the audience. It was in 1976 with the movie called "Future World" that 3D technology was used first. The term was first coined by, William Fetter, an employee at Boeing Co. It was with the release of "Toy Story" in 1996 that the concept of 3D was taken onto another level.

It is fascinating to see a 3D flick but the hard work is in creating it. Professionals dedicate months and years to create one movie. An interesting fact is that for us to perceive a complete animated film the pictures should be played at a minimum of 12 frames per second. However, it should not be faster than 70 frames per second because the human brain cannot perceive it.

Creating a computer 3D animation is not an easy task. It requires enormous expertise and technical support. For creating specialized computer animated graphics it is advisable that you contact professionals. Not only expertise in this domain but also proper technology is required. In creating 3D animation the animator is initially required to create a skeletal framework of the character, this is known as avars or animated variables.

You can try to create 3Danimations from your home PC but it will take ages for you to attain perfection. To create a skilled and perfect computer 3D animation one requires highly powered technologically advanced expensive work stations. Operating systems like Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are the most commonly used. Other equipments like motion capture, movie capture, performance capture, blue screen etc are also used for attaining perfection.

Interactive navigation will keep the visitors interested and would induce them to seeing the entire website at one go.

o Lends You visibility: flash animations help you revive a dead website. There are tens of thousands of websites on Internet. To get visibility should be the only motto. Using this technique on your website lends it freshness and authenticity which gives it ranking and visibility among the other websites.

There are many myths associated with it are:

o It makes the website slow: this is so untrue. It purely depends on the intelligence of the designer. The designer should not try and inculcate all things in one single movie. This will undoubtedly make the website page loading quite slow.

o Flash Animation is quite expensive: flash animations are considered to be the way too expensive. But this cost includes copywriting and customization. Keeping this in consideration, the cost justifies its benefits.

Warning Signs of a Breakup - 3 Indications of Impending Doom For Your Relationship

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Many people are completely caught by surprise when their spouse or significant other wants to end the marriage or relationship. You need to know these 3 warning signs of a breakup so you are not caught by surprise and suffer the emotional trauma of divorce or split.

What you do not know can hurt you; knowledge of these 3 warning signs will better prepare you to address a problem before it results in breakup or divorce.

Warning Sign #1: It seems like your partner or spouse is ignoring you.

First I have to define ignoring. I do not mean they act like you are not there. They may be talking to you often, but perhaps only in the context of running the household, the kids or maybe you work together at a job; never anything personal. This is definitely a warning sign of a breakup you cannot ignore.

The question is, do they show concern for you, your health, whether you appear to be up or down on a particular day. Are they still remembering special events like birthdays, anniversaries (maybe the anniversary of your first date that you always used to go out to celebrate).

Perhaps you should surprise them by asking them out to a nice dinner - at home if you cannot afford to go out - and casually ask how things are going and if everything is OK or not. Try to get them talking about their feelings toward your relationship.

Warning Sign #2: You never do anything together anymore.

For married couples, do you ever date anymore, just the two of you? Maybe even just put the kids to be and watch a movie together with some popcorn or movie candy many stores sell for per box.

If you are a couple dating, are you finding your boyfriend or girlfriend just never seems to be available anymore? Do they use you when you can be a convenient helper, or perhaps a convenient bed partner, but never actually take you out on an enjoyable outing?

Either of these would be an indication of a problem in the relationship that is probably headed to a breakup that will come as a surprise to you unless you heed this sign and take action.

Warning Sign #3: The physical aspect of the relationship is dead or dying.

If you have been together for a while you may have experienced what all couples do in that the raw animal attraction fades. A new relationship has energy that usually cannot be maintained for long periods of time.

Nevertheless, there should still be physical attraction and activity between the two of you. If that is absent, are you just friends? Or are you just being used to help with his or her needs in life?

A healthy relationship covers all of these bases, not just the convenient or expedient ones. If there is no physical activity between the two of you for weeks or months at a time, it is definitely time to do more than just get worried; you need to get busy.

There is a chance that outside factors like problems at work or the effects of a tough economy can be at fault for bad moods or distant behavior. But even then, untreated this will definitely harm your relationship and can lead to unwanted divorce or breakup.

Cosplay Subculture

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Cosplay is a youth subculture originating in Japan. The moniker is derived from the words "costume" and "play", and is believed to have been first thought up in 1984 by a Japanese studio executive named Nov Takahashi. When he wrote for Japanese science fiction magazines about the impressive costumes worn by attendees at the Los Angeles World Science Fiction Convention, he gradually adopted the portmanteau term cosplay, which is used to describe the trend today.

The main feature of cosplay is that participants enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters from anime, comic books, and video games. It has developed to include, particularly when adopted in the west, people dressing up as characters from popular non-Asian fantasy and science fiction movies and games, such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and World of Warcraft.

As a fashion concept, cosplay has also been seen to extend towards a style of dressing up not only as established, famous characters, but as characters that the enthusiast has developed themselves. This is often a crossover into the Japanese Lolita style of dress, where girls wear a distinctive, cute style. This allows girls who like the look but do not want to fully adopt the Lolita style as street dress to enjoy the less serious "Cosplay Lolita" style at cosplay events and venues.

Additional trends and sub-genres in cosplay include "crossplay", which involves wearing the costume of a character of the opposite sex, and participants called "dollars", who wear full body suits and masks to play characters without their own faces on show, rather like sports mascots.

Cosplay is usually something that takes place at parties, concerts, conventions and venues where likeminded people meet to show off their (often hand crafted) costumes, socialize, and photograph other enthusiasts. The most popular area for these kind of activities is the fashionable Harajuku area of Tokyo. In the district of Akihabara, a number of cosplay themed cafes have been opened during the last decade to cater to the cosplayers, and the staff all wear anime themed costumes themselves.

Twice a year, hundreds of thousands of cosplayers flock to Tokyo to visit the Comiket convention and market - the largest event in the world for cosplay enthusiasts.

The concept of dressing up and of taking part in role play based around popular characters also exists in the west, where cosplay style outfits are worn to attend science fiction and comic book conventions. The largest of these is held annually in San Diego.

How to Choose Eye-Catching Cake Toppers

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

Whether you're an avid baker or a connoisseur of fine baking, you'll know that the right cake topper makes the cake. Cake toppers are available in a wide range of designs to suit every occasion and taste. When planning an important wedding or birthday, consider the following tips for choosing perfect toppers.

Match the Style or Tone of the Celebration

The style of a celebration depends on who is invited and the preferences of the guests of honor. Cake toppers for wedding cakes, for example, may be formal-- or the couple may prefer a contemporary, even humorous style. Birthdays are usually fun and festive, but for the cake, some people choose a classic, elegant look, with ribbons, fresh flowers, and fine porcelain.

For traditional marriages, vintage wedding cake toppers are an option. Did you know that a wedding cake topper from the 1930's or even 20's can be purchased online? A classic cake might be crowned with fresh flowers, porcelain intertwined hearts, an elegant monogram, or kissing doves. A contemporary original art piece, made by a skilled crafts person, creates beauty and elegance. A metal or acrylic shape displaying the names of bride and groom; or engraved with words such as "Love" or "Bliss", create a romantic tone.

For a lighthearted celebration, look for funny wedding cake toppers, such as figurines of a married couple having fun on the beach in Hawaii, hiking in the mountains, riding a motorcycle, horseback riding, or golfing. Other options depict the "war" between the sexes-there are figurines that show a bride lassoing the groom, a bride holding the belt of a kneeling groom, and bride dragging the groom by the leg.

Birthday cake toppers also reflect different styles. For elegance or simplicity, aim for one single topper that is either attractive or informative. An attractive birthday cake topper might be a bouquet of flowers, a silk butterfly, or a satin bow. An informative topper might be the birthday year, the person's name, a framed photo, or a birthday greeting. A topper made of a good quality metal, glass, or acrylic, with a touch of color or jewels can be quite elegant.

For a fun or more personalized birthday cake, consider toppers that create a story. The cake may display a special interest or hobby or show characters from a favorite cartoon or movie. A theme cake is colorful, detailed, and an entertaining conversation piece.

Get to Know the Guests of Honor

Knowing something about the wedding couple, birthday "girl", or birthday "boy" can be quite helpful when selecting cake toppers. Beyond color and material preferences, it helps to know hobbies, interests, favorite animals, and favorite flowers, etc. when the cake is being personalized.

You may already know enough about the honored person(s). If not, interview a few family members or friends to discover the right theme. There is probably no sport, hobby, or taste that cannot be depicted with cake toppers, for example, picture a golf green with golfers, a scary scene with bats and vampires, or Pokémon figures in action on a birthday cake. A wedding cake may display many personal motifs or a single crowning figurine showing a couple engaging in an activity they enjoy.

Know Your Budget

As nice as it is to splurge for a special occasion, most of us have a budget. Fortunately, selections are available for every budget. For a wedding, consider rental as an alternative to purchasing. Look for edible and inedible toppers at bulk food stores, baking shops, and crafts stores. Browse the internet for catalogue items and custom order selections.

Order on Time

Shopping in advance is the best way to ensure that you come up with an exciting idea and get what you want. When ordering a custom made item for a wedding, keep peak wedding seasons in mind and order many months in advance. Internet shopping will yield many figurines that are unavailable in local shops, but remember to allow sufficient time for shipping.

Use Toppers as Party Souvenirs

Toppers on wedding cakes are often treasured for years as family heirlooms. When used on wedding cupcakes, toppers double as decorations and as party favors for each guest. A single monogram or figurine on a birthday cake can be an additional birthday gift; and multiple figurines on a birthday cake or on cupcakes can be souvenirs for party guests.

Consult with Others

Some people enjoy the surprise factor and choose to keep cake decorations a secret until the special day. This works for birthdays, as they come up every year. A wedding, on the other hand, occurs much less frequently--so getting one or more second opinions may not be a bad idea. Before purchasing or placing an order, get the input of one or more important people involved with the celebration. This last step will ensure that you have done all that is possible to select a fabulous cake topper.

The History of 3D Technology

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

3D technology can be traced all the way back to the beginning of photography. In 1844 David Brewster invented the Stereoscope. It was a new invention that could take photographic images in 3D. Later, Louis Jules Duboscq took that invention and improved on it. Louis took a picture of Queen Victoria using the improved technology and displayed it at the Great Exhibition in 1851. This picture became very well known throughout the world. Steroscopic cameras started to catch on and became fairly common for personal use by World War II.

In 1855 the Kinematascope, a stereo animation camera, was invented. It was able to create 3d motion pictures. In 1915 the first anaglyph movie was produced. Anaglyph technology used 3d glasses with 2 different color lenses that would direct an image to each eye. In 1890 William Friese-Greene, a British film pioneer, filed a patent for the 3D movie process. In 1922 the first public 3D movie, "The Power of Love", was displayed. In 1935 the first 3D Color movie was produced. The use of the technology would remain dormant for over a decade.

In the 1950s, 3D technology made a come back. During this era, TVs had become extremely popular and had started appearing in many households. In the 50s a number of 3D movies were being produced. In 1952 "Bwana Devil" by United Artists was shown across the United States. This was the first 3D movie of the 50s. The film was shot using a process called Natural Vision. This process was pitched to Hollywood studios but they all passed. A year later, in 1953, "House of Wax" was released in 3D. "Dial M for Murder" was originally planned to be released in 3D, but Alfred Hitchcock decided to release the movie in 2D to maximize profits. Not all movie theaters were equipped with the 3D technology. 3D films were also being developed outside of the United States. In 1947 The Soviet Union released their first full length 3D movie, "Robinson Crusoe".

In the 1960s a new technology called Space-Vision 3D was released. This technology took two images and printed them over each other on a single strip. Unlike previous 3D technologies, it required a single projector with a special lens. This new technology removed the need to use two cameras to display 3D movies. Two camera systems were difficult to use, because it required that the two cameras were perfectly synced. The first movie to use this technology was "The Bubble". The movie was panned by critics, but the 3D experience still brought huge audiences. It became a profitable movie, making the new technology ready for promotion to other studios.

In 1970, Allan Silliphant and Chris Condon developed Stereovision. This was a new 3D technology that put two images squeezed together side by side on a single strip of 35 mm film. This technology used a special anamorphic lens that would widen the picture using a series of polaroid filters. The first movie to be released in Stereovision was a softcore sex comedy called "The Stewardesses". The movie cost only 0,000 USD to make and it earned an amazing million in North America.

In the early 1980s many movies were released in 3D using the same process as Space Vision. Some of the movies that were released were Amityville 3-D, Friday the 13th Part III, and Jaws 3-D. In the mid 1980s, IMAX began producing documentary films in 3D. IMAx's 3D technology emphasized mathmatical correctness and this eliminated the eye fatigue that was seen in previous 3D technologies. In 1986, Canada had developed the first 3D movie that used polarized glasses. It was called "Echos of the Sun" and was created for Expo 86.

During the 1990s, many films were released in IMAX 3D. The most successful IMAX 3D film released during this time was "Into the Deep". The first IMAX 3D fiction film, "Wings of Courage" was released in 1996.

During the 2000s, many big studio movies were released in 3D. In 2003, James Cameron released Ghosts of the Abyss. This was the first full length 3D IMAX feature film. This movie used the latest IMAX 3D technology called Reality Camera System. The technology used the latest HD video cameras and was developed by Vince Pace. This same technology was used in "Spy Kids 3D: Game over", "Aliens of the Deep", and "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D". In 2004 the first full length animated 3D movie was released. It was called "The Polar Express". This movie was so successful in 3D that it prompted a great interest in 3D animated films. The 3D version of the film earned 14x as much per screen as the 2D version. In 2005, The Mann's Chinese 6 theater in Hollywood became the first commercial movie theater to have the Digital 3D technology. In 2007 Scar 3D was released internationally and it was the first film to be filmed using a completely digital workflow.

In 2010 Sky UK made a big push towards 3D television. On January 1st, the first 3D channel began broadcasting in South Korea. The channel displays educational shows, animated shows, sporting events, documentaries and musical performances all in 3D, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We should expect that the use of 3D technology will continue and expand in to the normal household. Most major electronics manufacturers are planning the release of their 3D television lines. As the technology ages, expect prices to go lower and lower, and as they prices drop, more and more people will purchase 3D television sets.

There Virtual World Review - Create an Avatar & Life Out a Virtual Existence in a Fantastical World

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

With the success of Second Life, virtual reality simulations have come into their own in the past 5 years. Promising users an experience that transcends the limitations of real life, a virtual reality sim lets you be whatever you want to be right from the comfort of your own home. No wonder that the number of these virtual worlds/simulations has increased exponentially in the past few years.

There is a virtual world where you can create your own avatar and roam around in a 3D world populated by other There.com members. You can interact with other members, build your own houses, dress up your characters, buy stuff for them, etc. In other words, There aims to create an online identity for yourself that reflects the real you, or, as There.com itself puts it, be "everything you've imagined and wished for".

There is actually a downloadable application (around 500MB in size) that runs on your desktop. The system requirements are quite low and if you bought your PC within the past 2 years, you shouldn't have any problem running There.com.

There works on a membership model. Basic membership to the virtual world is free, but you have to shell out money for premium features like voice chat, or to buy virtual goods such as houses, clothing, accessories, etc.

Once you install the There.com application and become a member, you will be prompted to create your avatar. This 3D avatar will be your physical representation in the virtual world, and you have access to a wide variety of templates to pick from when making your avatar. You can dress up the model from a few different sets of clothing and accessories. Later on in the game, you can buy different items for your avatar to trick out his appearance.

After your avatar is created, you can basically walk around the various environments (desert, tropical paradise, city, town, etc.) chatting up with other members. If you have a premium membership, you can even voice chat with your fellow There.com users. There essentially works like a somewhat surreal simulation of real life; you will meet a wide variety of people in the virtual world, all dressed as wildly as you can possibly imagine.

Where There.com really shines is in its creation of a living, breathing world. You can buy and furnish your own house (and even put it up for rent), go shopping for shoes and clothing, buy yourself a car (or design your own ride), hold an exhibition of your 'art' (which you can later sell for Therebucks - There.com's virtual currency), create your own virtual movies, and lots, lots more. The way you interact with other members and the world around you makes for a delightful experience, and it is not extra ordinary to strike up deep and meaningful friendships with people halfway across the globe.

However, in terms of pure features and interactivity potential, There cannot hold a candle to Second Life. Although these are two completely different beasts (Second Life is more of a virtual reality simulation, while There is more chat and people oriented), comparisons to Second Life are inevitable, if unfair.

In terms of graphics, There does not match up to the latest PC games such as Call of Duty 4. Nonetheless, the "game" still looks quite good and runs very smoothly on even old PCs. There's servers are more than capable of handling the load of several thousand players, and there is hardly any lag while playing the game.

Users concerned about privacy issues will have to just buckle up and go with the flow. A virtual world, by default, does not endear itself to privacy, and There is no different. Although you can block individual users (or groups of users), it is very easy for other members to see what you've been up to in the game. Paranoid people should best avoid this game.

In conclusion, There is a great virtual world that excels in its handling of chat and people-to-people interactions. If you are looking for something more complex and demanding, you might be disappointed with the limited features that There offers, but for those of you looking to meet new people without all the hassles of a virtual life simulation, There is the perfect tool.

John Ratzenberger and His Roles in Pixar Movies

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

John Ratzenberger is an actor most famous for his role as a mailman named Cliff Claven in the 1980s sitcom Cheers. This was the place for his funnyman lines, being the sort of Know-it-all guy with an inflated ego.

Ratzenberger's got a unique voice and Pixar has kind of regarded him as their good luck charm. They create a character for him to voice if one hasn't been integrated into the story at the time.

Of all the Pixar roles Ratzenberger's gotten to play, the one that's his favorite is P.T. Flea, the hot-headed ringmaster of the Circus Bugs. John loves this character because he's so on edge and unpredictable.

What are the other characters he plays in Pixar films? Let's go through the list and find out.

Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 (coming June 2010): John Ratzenberger's Pixar movie role in the Toy Story movies is Hamm the piggy bank. Hamm is pals with Mr. Potato Head and they do well together with their sarcastic wit. Hamm's a bit of a pessimist and likes to take pot shots at his fellow toys, often jumping to the wrong conclusions about them too quickly.

A Bug's Life: In the second Pixar film, as mentioned, Ratzenberger's role was that of P.T. Flea, ringmaster for the troupe of Circus Bugs. He's greedy, demanding and obsessed with money. Being a highly irritable bug, he fires the troupe after they failed the "Flaming Death" performance.

Monster's Inc.: In 2001, John Ratzenberger's role in Monsters Inc. was for The Abominable Snowman, a monster who had been banished from Monstropolis some time ago. Mike and Sulley were also banished when they discovered Henry Waternoose's agenda and were sent to the snowy Himalayan mountains where they meet Mr. Abominable. Looming and frightening at first, he quickly greets the two with "Welcome to the Himalayas!" and is a hospitable, gentle creature. Personally, he is my favorite Ratzenberger-voiced character!

Finding Nemo: The role John plays in this film is unique; it's not a single character, but a school of moonfish. Marlin and Dory cross paths with the school of moonfish as they search for a way to get to Sydney, Australia. The moonfish swim together with remarkable precision and can make pictures of such shapes as an octopus and the Sydney Opera House. They poke fun of Marlin by making his shape and moving his mouth as he explains something to Dory, whom he's upset. In the end, the moonfish make a brilliant, flashing arrow, pointing the way to the East Australian Current, the superhighway direct to Sydney.

The Incredibles: Stick around to the very end for The Incredibles, because John Ratzenberger's minor role doesn't occur until, literally, the end of the film. After the Parr family (The Incredibles) defeat the Omnidroid and Syndrome, they think they're back into a life of normal routine. As the family is leaving the track event Dash just finished, a villain named The Underminer breaks through the surface of the parking lot in an enormous drilling machine. He's a mole-like monster who declares war on peace and happiness. The Incredibles family don their masks, ready for the challenge of defeating a new bad guy.

Cars: Big, lovable and loyal, Razenberger's role on this Pixar film is Mack, a 1985 Mack Semi-Hauler who wears the red and white Rust-Eze cap and pulls the fancy, state-of-the-art container for Lightning McQueen. Even when the rest of McQueen's crew quit on him for being so arrogant and obnoxious, Mack sticks by him. McQueen later demands that Mack drive all through the night to get to LA for the tiebreaker race of the Piston Cup. Mack can barely stay awake though, and finally dozes off when a gang of street racer cars put on some pretty music. This is when the trailer door opens and Lightning McQueen's adventure begins.

Ratatouille: Ratzenberger's role for Ratatouille is in a restaurant full of colorful characters. He plays Mustafa, the head water of Gusteau's in Paris, France. Mustafa is a plump man with a thin mustache. He's great at taking orders, but only if they're off the menu. When the feared food critic Anton Ego snidely tells Mustafa to "Serve me some fresh perspective," the waiter looks like a deer caught in the headlights, frozen with fear and confusion. What's that supposed to mean, he wonders.

WALL-E: John plays John in WALL-E. John is one of the passengers aboard The Axiom starliner who is lost in his own world with holographic screens and a sedentary lifestyle. Robots wait on him every moment of the day and in the movie John mistakes WALL-E for a drink-bot and falls out of his chair. This is what "wakes" him up and the small robot introduces himself to John. Later on, John meets Mary, another passenger who has been awakened from the oblivion around her. Together they watch EVE and WALL-E space dancing outside and then they notice one another, feeling an attraction. They help one another save babies when Auto tries to take over the ship and John shows some real leadership qualities.

Up: Ratzenberger's role in this Pixar film is Tom, a construction worker on the site surrounding Carl Fredricksen's home. John relates to Tom because he used to be a house framer before his career in acting took off. Tom is friendly toward the old man Carl, and makes an offer on the house on behalf of his boss. But his answer is met with a face full of wind as Carl points the leaf blower at him. Carl then takes Tom's megaphone and insults his boss, to which Tom shouts back urgently that he's not with him. Poor Tom!

These are the Pixar Roles that John Ratzenberger has played thus far. I hope that Pixar continues this tradition along with the many other fun traditions in their animated films. The characters and roles Mr. Ratzenberger shall play in future films will be so much fun to listen for as we sit in the theater immersed in a great Pixar story.

Movie Review - Big Miracle (2012) (PG)

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

The Politics of Saving Whales

An international effort to free three gray whales - Bonnet, Crossbeak, and Bone - briefly made headlines in October of 1988. In the Beaufort Sea near the town of Point Barrow, Alaska, an Inuit hunter discovered the whales trapped beneath pack ice; using only chainsaws and water pumps, the hunter and his fellow villagers took it upon themselves to cut through the ice and attempt to lead the whales towards open water. A week later, word had already spread to the remainder of the Inuit community, local biologists, and an Anchorage news station. The story then caught the attention of national media journalists, leading to a series of actions that became known as Operation Breakthrough. Whale biologists, the United States Department of State, and two Soviet icebreakers all became involved. By the end of the month, the calf whale had died. And although the icebreakers successfully broke through a ridge of Arctic ice, the fate of the remaining two whales could not be determined.

It comes as no surprise to me that Big Miracle, a dramatization of Operation Breakthrough, not only renames the whales Fred, Wilma, and Bam Bam but also presents audiences with a more conclusive ending. It also doesn't bother me in the slightest. Movies like this give us what we often times don't get in real life, namely a sense of optimism, the satisfaction of achieving the impossible, and most importantly, emotional resolution. We go to them not only expecting to feel good, but actually craving it. If you think I'm wrong, you need only to reflect on the strong positive reactions to Free Willy, Dolphin Tale, and even non-marine animal movies as recent as War Horse. I value authentic films that deal with life's harsh realities, but I also recognize that we need movies like Big Miracle in our lives. They're entertaining, but more to the point, they instill hope, even if it's only for a few hours.

In terms of marine-themed movies, its most recent basis of comparison is Dolphin Tale, which was also a dramatic adaptation of a true story. Although both films show considerable artistic license for the sake of appealing to a family audience, Big Miracle is refreshing in that it isn't quite as innocent. It's made clear, almost from the very start, that the effort to save the whales has less to do with the whales themselves and more to do with the characters' personal, professional, and political agendas. It's not about setting aside their differences and working together so much as it is about doing what it takes to make a point and get ahead. In a few instances, director Ken Kwapis has the temerity to espouse the validity of opposing viewpoints. Ultimately, it's good to know that the all the partisanship and personality deficits are only bringing the whales that much close to freedom.

We have an Anchorage news reporter named Adam Carlson (John Krasinski), who has been living in Point Barrow for four years covering menial stories, many centering around the town's only Mexican restaurant; when he discovers the whales trying to break through the ice for air, he realizes that this could be his opportunity to enter larger, more respected news organizations. We have Adam's ex-girlfriend, a Greenpeace activist named Rachel Kramer (Drew Barrymore), who protests everything from Alaskan oil drilling to Inuit whaling and sees the trapped whales as a way to give Greenpeace a bigger voice. We have the Inuit people; although they rely on whales for food, they recognize that the American journalists will interpret their actions as murder instead of survival, and so they join the rescue effort to paint themselves in a better light.

We have J.W. McGraw (Ted Danson), an oil tycoon whose company won the rights to drill for oil in the Point Barrow area. His wife (Kathy Baker), rather cleverly, subliminally convinces him that funding the transportation of an icebreaking hovercraft will give his company good P.R. A White House aide named Kelly Meyers (Vinessa Shaw) thinks along similar lines; this rescue effort would not only add credibility to Vice President George Bush's election campaign, it would also do wonders for turning the public's attention away from the mistakes of the Reagan administration. She gets into contact Col. Scott Boyer (Dermot Mulroney), who begrudgingly oversees the mission to transport the hovercraft towards Point Barrow.

The list goes on. There's a Los Angeles news reporter (Kristen Bell), who isn't taken seriously by her superiors, is always under pressure to look beautiful for the camera, and is just as ambitious as Adam. She's also aware that, because of the attention the whales are getting, the public remains unaware of the thirty-plus wars going on in the world. And then there's a pair of Minnesota businessmen who see this rescue as an opportunity to test their ice-melting fans and ultimately drum up business. It all comes down to all-American heroism, which seems to be the attitude that unifies everyone in this effort. So imagine the shock and reluctance when it becomes clear that the assistance of a Soviet icebreaker ship will be required. How nice of Big Miracle to remind us that, however momentarily, even enemies can believe in the same cause.

AFS - South Africa, Surf and Safari and Our Marriage Too!

3D ANIMATION MOVIES:

South Africa is more than a place you merely see, it's a country to experience with all five senses. It's an emotional encounter that makes one want to return and so I have now on my 5th visit to this land of beauty and freedom. It is a land of contrasts where traditional African ways are blended with those of modern Europe.

Here we are more a traveler than a tourist as we set out on safari changing hotels each night. We follow the Garden Route, the premier tour route preferred by locals. I (AdventuresForSingles.com, 770-432-8225, 24 land) bring in tow a way-cool group of 45 singles which includes a fighter pilot, 2 physicians, 2 psychoanalysts (who came in handy for me), mother/daughter, father/son, the uncle of Julia Roberts and one of my favorite clients whose passport stamps trump mine, Frank.

Carol Gardner is our omniscient and omnipresent guide for the entire trip. With such energy and enthusiasm, she's like a meerkat popping up every minute to meet every need. Her knowledge knows no bounds and her passion for her country was infectious. She taught us the good, bad and the ugly. We learned about history, tribal customs, apartheid and Aids. As we passed endless shantytowns of tin shacks, we understood why the unemployment rate was at 39%. This is the wealthiest nation in Africa, but its resources are stretched due to the influx of 50,000 refugees each year from neighboring nations. We learn that when a man erects a hut on your front lawn, after 72 hours you must allow him to remain or find him a new place to settle. In a population 30% white and 70% of color, reverse discrimination occurs for jobs. There are 11 official languages in South Africa. Most speak Afrikaans, a language derived from the Bushmen and Dutch. There is an indescribable warmth and friendliness in the people here. "Ubuntu" is their word for welcome. They have no word for stranger in their native tongue.

When I say I'm taking a group to South Africa., the geo-illiterate think I'm going to the southern part of Africa. This is the upscale country of the continent where one can get all the creature comforts within their adventure. We follow the Western Cape, the hot spot at peak season and a totally malaria free zone. Here the seasons are reversed from the US and it is spring. Our quest is to see the Big 7. On Kenya trips we searched for the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo), but here we add the whale and shark. Personally speaking, I've embarked on the most profound journey of my life. Terry and I planned to marry onboard South African Airways flight #2973, an aviation first. This was the flight we met on 9/22/02 as he was a client of mine then heading to Krueger. It was our dream to tie the knot here. [If interested, see story on the wedding below.]

Day 2 - Cape Town rules with incredible natural wonders and trendiness. A cross between San Francisco and Rio, I could certainly reside here. We do a full day Peninsula tour including Camps Bay, Fish Hook, Simons Town, Hout Bay and more. Along the spectacular coast we saw whales breeching. The highlights included a cruise to Seal Island, a hike among thousands of penguins and funicular up to Cape of Good Hope where the Atlantic and Indian oceans merge. There were many great Kodak moments. At night all scattered to the famous V&A Waterfront with its plethora of pubs and cafes.

Day 3 - We head to laid back Hermanus for a whale of a good time. The annual whale festival is on led by the world's only "Whale Crier" who blows his horn at each sighting. Whales gather here every September to mate. The clear bays are nurseries for mother and calves. There are about 5000 Southern Right Whales named centuries ago as they were the right whales to hunt. They have no teeth and swallow up to 400lbs of fish per day. My supplier said we should see thousands gathered here in protected bays, but locals told me they were shy today and only a few surfaced. Nevertheless it was a great free day of festivities. The whole town goes whale-gaga and we loved mingling with the friendly locals.

Springtime is in bloom now with a kaleidoscope of geraniums, lavender, canola, starburst and colorful protea. My wedding bouquet was calla lilies. Here they grow like weeds. We spent the night in the charming tiny town of Arniston. Our hotel sat ocean's edge surrounded by mountains that were dotted with lighthouses.

Day 4 - We depart through majestic mountains and Mossel Bay famous for their calamaris that are the size of steaks. Our destination was Oudtshoorn, "Feather capital of the world." Since 1864 this is the world's foremost supplier of all things ostrich; hide, meat and feathers. We visit a huge farm to witness mating and hatching. Some got to ride the oddball creatures. Next stop was a wildlife center for an opportunity to get extremely close to various native animals. We had our photos petting leopards, lion cubs and a pigmy hippo named Humphrey. This was home to Duma, the famous cheetah from the movie of the same name. Rare white tigers are bred here. There are only 300 left on earth. Many in our group partook in the worlds only "caged croc dive" where they were lowered by cage into the warm water and surrounded by chomping jaws. These Nile crocs are huge. One bite and could break your spine and shatter all your ribs. This place provided many thrilling encounters.

Our final stop was the famous UNESCO Cango Caves, Arica's largest show cave. I nearly opted out of going as I'm not a cave woman. It was however, incredibly impressive as we walked chamber to chamber in massive dry caverns which are a mere 800,000 years old.

Day 5 - We arrive to lovely Plettenberg Bay. First tour is Monkeyland, the world's first free roaming mutli-specie primate sanctuary. Here it's all about rescue of previously abused monkeys, baboons, apes and lemurs of Madagascar. They tried to steal our belongings at our outdoor lunch. Later we visited the Elephant sanctuary for a hands on interactive educational tour. I didn't know African elephants could be tamed like Asian or Indian. We learned that no other creature is as understanding as the elephant which can learn, remember, meditate and conceive such things man can hardly perform. We enjoyed a Trunk-In-Hand tour where we walked, fed and examined by touch its ears, tail, tongue and tear ducts. That was sweet. The trainers were Zulu-men. I departed giving them a thumbs up. With big grins they thanked me. I didn't know this gesture in Zulu signified they were highly fertile.

We spent 2 nights at Whalesong Lodge overlooking the ocean and a favorite of all. Here a surprise wedding reception was arranged for us with cakes, local wines and more from our US supplier. After Frank made a heartfelt toast, we all sang "Going to the airplane and we're gonna get married..." Dinners were on our own. Everything is so affordable here that we often ordered 4 courses.

Day 6 - We've traveled to Knysna, oyster capital of the world. There we boarded a ferry and sailed to Featherbed Nature Reserve. 4x4 Jeeps then took us to the summit of the Western Heads for breathtaking views of the sea. From there we did a downhill hike through forest to the crashing waves on the coast. (It's the most dangerous bay on earth for boats which sail these waters and thus are unable to even get insurance.) A fresh seafood buffet greets us at the Food Forest set under a canopy of milkwood trees. In departing this little piece of paradise, I noticed the pier is black covered in mussels. Rare seahorses are bred here. These remarkable creatures mate for life and it's the male that gives birth.

In the afternoon we joined Ocean Safari's in search of whales, dolphins and sharks. For me, this was the highlight of the trip. It was so unique how they launched our boats like rockets into the Atlantic. These research boats allowed us legally to get extremely close to whales. Our boat came upon two 50 ton whales mating. One was the size of Moby Dick that gracefully arced as the other slapped its flipper with a cascade of water. It was like seeing 2 motorcoaches rolling in the water. Another boat spotted 2 pods of 20 whales playing together. This eco-adventure was a powerful experience that left us in stunned silence until our departure. Fighting the surf on our return to shore was like storming the beaches of Normandy (sans bullets) and very thrilling.

Day 7-9 - We set out for our longest drive of 4 hours to our game reserve. The scenery was unblemished under the African sun with rolling hills, indigenous forests, golden beaches and sand dunes that spilled into the sea. We arrived to luxurious Kariega, a private reserve with an abundance of game that was a world apart. Set in 14,000 lush acres bordered by the Bushmans rivers, it was stunning. We passed the electric gates to see herds of gazelle, water buck, antelope and wildebeest. The landscape was a giant lawn for the omnivore wildlife to satisfy their appetites.

Total comfort was provided in our exquisite chalets. Some in our group had their own private swimming pools. All meals were included. The variety of fresh local dishes was a culinary feast. As Terry tried to nap after lunch, a dozen monkeys surrounded his balcony and one managed to unlatch his chalet door. It peered in to see if a raid was possible. He chased them away and outside saw colorful birds fill the trees with a backdrop of 3 giraffe.

Five game drives were provided and at the sunset photo stops wine and beverages were added. Our ranger guides were excellent and these were the most comfortable safari jeeps made. Conservation here is paramount. In nature nothing is guaranteed. I've known friends to spend thousands of dollars on African safaris and with rain they saw little of anything. The benefit of a private reserve is guaranteed sightings. This was just a taste of what Africa holds but here we obtained the best photography ever within mere feet of lions, elephants, rhino and countless more animals.

Lions in the grass

Cape Buffalo is the most dangerous animal in Africa - but not this one.

The Cape buffalo is the most dangerous animal on earth due to its unpredictability. It's the only animal a Masai warrior will run from. Several here had been semi-domesticated and suddenly approached our jeeps. One client reached out to pet it as if it were the barnyard cow. It remained calm but rage could occur within seconds. For free time we enjoyed a river cruise among hippos and hiked on marked trails. No where else have I been able to walk among wild eland and zebra in the bush like I did here!

Our farewell "Boma dinner" of traditional cuisine was set under the stars of the Southern Cross. The local staff sang and danced by a bonfire. It was a perfect end to our journey well done. We departed from Port Elizabeth via Dakar Senegal back to Washington and I reflect. I must arrange more trips to Africa from Victoria Falls, the Serengeti, Sahara, Nile, Great Rift Valley, Red Sea, the pyramids and more. It's the wonders in these life changing places that leave a traveler with the greatest impressions. And I'll return again to this little kingdom of South Africa with its limitless horizons and promising future. Our next adventure will be Swaziland & Kwa Zulu Natal.

The day we left, our suitcases had swelled double in size from all the affordable souvenirs. As our driver Johann loaded them, I hugged him goodbye. He drove us 1473 kilometers (900 miles) with an ever present smile. I say goodbye to Carol who went beyond the call of duty to please us. For a moment in time, she was like our mother. Then goodbyes were exchanged between my wonderful group who met as strangers and in the end felt like family. On return home I unpacked with delight to see my ostrich eggs have made it without a crack. Among the backlog of emails was a special one from "The ZA Show." I did a live worldwide radio/podcast interview the next day. The subject was why I love South Africa. I was so relaxed it went without a hitch.

9/22/06 "Our Marriage in the Clouds"

I neatly packed a wedding gown, full tiered veil, shoes, accessories and floral bouquet all to fit into a small bag like a skilled engineer. I abhor wrinkles and this is my greatest fear above all that can go wrong. And with new TSA restrictions on cosmetics and toiletries, my biggest challenge was attempting to smuggle them onboard. I prayed that the TSA's wouldn't do a pat down as I had strategically dispersed them on my body. It went without a hitch as I boarded our 17 hour flight from Washington DC to Johannesburg.

On arrival, chaos ensued due to problems with our next boarding passes into Cape Town. A long story made short, most of our group of 45 was bumped and split on to 3 different flights. Terry and I had to catch flt #2973. I lost him in the masses as an agent rushed me through security to board our plane that was waiting for us. It was 25 minutes late. The problem was I had no groom apparently because he got bumped from the flight! Intoxicated with jet lag, I collapsed like an umbrella into my seat. My stress reached its crescendo to a point where I could only surrender to whatever was to be. Minutes later, Terry arrives breathless and doors are latched for take off.. He takes the last empty seat row's behind me. We were clueless of procedure for this special event until a flight attendant knelt down to whisper "don't worry Suzy, we've anxiously awaited your wedding for two days."

When we leveled off, the crew escorted me to the back and instructed me to change into my bridal attire while they did a beverage service. Not an easy feat in an aircraft lavatory. I had to do yoga positions to get into my stockings.

Then all activity stopped. The purser announces over the PA for all passengers to remain seated. As I began to walk up the aisle, he read "Since ships sailed the 7 seas, captains have enjoyed the privilege of joining 2 people in matrimony. As world travelers, Terry and Suzy spend half their lives inflight. On this day 4 years ago they met on South Africa Airways (SAA) and are honored to be able to share their vows here today." I joined Terry who was dressed in his tux standing next to SAA Captain Richard Holdengarde who did our nuptials. I believe he was as nervous as me while he read our vows. It was beautiful and I shed some tears of joy.

Terry and I then walked down the aisle as all applauded. The media was onboard. We were moved up to first class for interviews and photo while the meals were served. We were presented with some lovely South African gifts from SAA. The crew distributed our wedding favors for all. On deplaning, we were met by the airline management and did some photos outside the aircraft. Entering baggage claim, people stared at us in wonderment. The event was enjoyed by all and certainly a dream come true for us. As a former flight attendant of 14 years, I believe this was a first in aviation history.

I collected my group, loaded the coach and checked them into the beautiful Cape Sun Hotel. The manager assigned Terry and I the penthouse suite on the 32nd floor with spectacular views of Table Mountain. There were 5 rooms, sunken jacuzzi, dozens of roses, endless fruit, cheeses, chocolates as well as champagne and local wines which we gave to our group. Exhausted by then all we could do was to conk out into our king size bed for a blissful sleep.

We later learned from locals enroute that our little wedding in the air was broadcast on the news and announced nationally in all the country's newspapers. Imagine that, we became famous for a moment in the land of the Zulu. My company, Adventures For Singles Inc., has given South African Airways a lot of group business throughout the years and they provided us this opportunity more as a favor than for publicity. It was a once in a lifetime experience and we remain forever grateful and loyal to them.
